I love playing airsoft, but after spending time on the forums and in the war store itself I feel like I'm gonna be way out of my league once I join in the games that are hosted by The War Store.
Did anyone else feel the same way when they started out?

Yea I kind of feel the same way. I just Bought a gun yesterday and it seems like its pretty hardcore. I just hope there is a gentle learning curve when it comes to the big games.

it's not as hardcore as it sounds. we have kids as young as 11 who play at the Grand Island field, so it's not super complex. however, we want it to be more than just "go there, shoot people".
thus, we introduce objectives and missions into the play, to force people to develop strategies and tactics, to scout and maneuver, and function in a team environment. after all, this is a military-simulation sport, so a military flavor should be present.
breaking your team into squads, assigning some to offensive objectives and others to guard and protect your resources, using radios, voices and hand signals to communicate, identifying those who have special-purpose weapons like sniper rifles, grenade launchers or SAW's and putting them to the correct use, is all part of good teamwork and key to helping to complete your objectives.
we're trying to build people's skills while still having lots of fun. we rotate everyone around every week, so all the players get to play with different people. this way, there's no favoritism, and everyone gets exposed to a wide variety of other people's play styles.
as everyone gets more and more experienced, we can introduce more elements to the game to enhance the realism and make missions, objectives and rules more complex. not all the time, but sometimes, we will have these more advanced games for those who enjoy a more serious experience.
nonetheless, you can never please all the people all the time. while most airsoft players play it as a mil-sim sport, not all do. some people just want to blast each other in a small plot of land like they're playing paintball and aren't interested in military tactics, teamwork or large-scale play with 50 or 60 other people.
if mil-sim is not your thing, then you probably won't like our flavor at Grand Island. both myself (the store owner) and Tom (the field owner) are both former military soldiers, so we run our games there with a military style.
still, 99% of everyone who comes has a fantastic time and likes the play style. so, come out and try it, as i'm sure you'll have a great time, learn some new tactics and strategies, and get to shoot plenty of people!

I will definitely go to one of the big skirmishes. I honestly think the way you said it, sounds 1000x better than shooting everyone in sight. I do feel better knowing that there is kids as young as 11 playing haha. It makes it seem a lot easier to get into than i thought originally. Either way i will try out a big skirmish and i probably will really enjoy it.

Hey, I'm 41 with 6 yrs military experience including the Gulf war in 91', and I felt the same as you do. The key is to experience it. You'll realize how fun it really is and you can only get better by playing against more skilled players. You'll soon realize that while there are many knowledgable, experienced players out there, you will also find there are just as many if not more not so smart or good players out there who have the fancy gear and know some of the lingo.

Those feelings will disappear eventually once you get more playing experience.
Then at some points, you will wish you had picked out volleyball instead. The point being is that those feelings of frustration or fear are actually a part of the actual experience.

any teams out there or anything looking for someone? you might try looking on the WNYAL website for a team to join, if that's what you want. most people are NOT on teams; maybe 20% at best are. everybody else freelances.
